The Episode/ Jehovah's Witness
|
In the middle of my wife's delivery of my first born son, Caleb, a whole team of nurses rush in suddenly because they observed Caleb's heart rate decreasing dangerously low. As I stared at the frantic scene, I was filled with dread thinking of the possibility that my son might die; and if so, I was somehow responsible.(Exodus 34:7; 2 Samuel 12: 14 - 18) Yet, I know now that this wasn't the case but we sometimes have the tendency to seek answers in certain dire situations without taking a careful consideration of all the facts. (Ezekiel 18:20) I began silently praying to my heavenly Father, saying " Father, please don't let my son die." As they hustle to figure out what is wrong, one doctor proceeds to speak, her voice quivering all the while out of fear. She said, "We might have to perform an emergency c-section. In the event that we do have to operate, there may be a chance that we have to give you a blood transfusion. Although the blood is screened, we cannot guarantee that you will not contract hepatitis or the HIV virus; despite, the likelihood of such an event being slim to none. If we come to the point that it is necessary, do you consent to a blood transfusion?" Thinking she and her son is about to die, my wife responds, "Yes!" All the while, I'm thinking that this has to be a test and if I don't say something my son and wife may possibly die. (Exodus 4:24-26) So at that point, I ask "Is it possible to consider first using alternatives to blood transfusions, such as plasma expanders, in the event that she needs blood?" (Acts 15:29) The doctor responds, "Are you a Jehovah's witnesses?" I think to myself: although I don't agree with everything those taking the lead believe and do and neither did Paul,(Acts 23:5; Galatians 2:11-22) and I no longer attend meetings, I cannot cease being a representative of Jehovah anymore than I can cease being a representative of Jesus. So I respond, "Yes, I am one of Jehovah's witnesses." At that point, the doctor turns to my wife and asks, "Are you also one of Jehovah's witnesses?" She responds, "No." So the doctor says to me, "Well, it's her decision." I reply, " I know that but I was just wondering if there are other options that you can try before administering blood." she says,"We always try our best to avoid giving a blood transfusion but if her blood count is so low that she needs it, then there really isn't any other option." I replied, "I understand." She then says,"I hope I didn't offend you but we ourselves don't like to give blood transfusions unless it is the last resort." I replied,"You didn't offend me, but I was just inquiring whether or not all the other alternatives would be considered until all those options were exhausted leaving a transfusion as a last resort." In the midst of our conversation, they were actually able to stabilize the babies heart rate. Ultimately, my wife had to undergo a c-section but it was able to be performed without the need for a blood transfusion with its many dangers. He was the quietest baby in the entire nursery. At the end of the ordeal, the scripture came to my mind: "We are not ignorant of satan's designs." (2 Corinthians 2:11) In addition, I don't condemn anyone for choosing to accept a blood transfusion anymore than I condemn a person for undergoing a prostrate exam or a pap smear. The same verse that said abstain from blood also said abstain from sexual immorality; yet, I don't believe we would conclude someone has committed sexual immorality due to them undergoing a medical procedure requiring their genitalia to be handled by someone of the same or opposite sex. If not, then why would we fail to reason similarly on the matter of blood in the medical arena? Let each ones bible trained conscience decide what medical procedure they are willing to or not to accept, (Romans 14:1-24) and judge with righteous judgements that our conclusions may be correct; (John 7:24) and thus, avoid condemning the guiltless ones. (Matthew 12:7)
